Start with the health and function of your teeth and gums.

02

Explore the treatments that could address your own goals.

03

Discuss previews, limitations, timing and maintenance.

Understand how personal preferences, oral health and function shape a smile plan.

For someone exploring a smile makeover in Istanbul, the starting point should be the concern they want to address—not a preset number of veneers or crowns. The aim is a result that fits the person while preserving appropriate function and as much healthy tooth tissue as possible.

What does a smile-design assessment consider?

The dentist looks at tooth shape, size, position and shade; the gum line; the smile line; and the relationship between the teeth and lips. Existing decay, gum disease, wear, cracks, restorations and bite forces also affect the options.

Aesthetic preferences are individual. Discuss what “natural” means to you, including colour, texture and small variations in shape. A very white or uniform design is not automatically the most appropriate choice.

Which treatments might be involved?

Whitening

If the main concern is the colour of healthy natural teeth, professional whitening may be considered. It does not change tooth position or the colour of existing restorations.

Veneers and bonding

Thin ceramic or composite restorations can change selected aspects of shape and appearance. They have different maintenance needs and preparation requirements. No-prep veneers are an option only where adding material suits the existing teeth.

Crowns

More extensively damaged or restored teeth may need a crown. Materials such as zirconia or lithium disilicate are chosen according to the clinical requirements, not simply a brand label. Crowns and veneers are not interchangeable descriptions.

Orthodontic treatment

Moving teeth can address alignment and bite concerns and may reduce the need for restorative changes. Our aligners versus braces guide explains the main considerations.

Gum treatment

Healthy gums are part of the foundation of a smile plan. A concern about an uneven gum line or a “gummy smile” needs diagnosis; gum reshaping is not suitable for every cause. Treating active disease takes priority over elective cosmetic changes.

Replacing missing teeth

Implants or other replacement options may form part of a broader plan. Their surgical, healing and maintenance requirements need to be coordinated with the remaining teeth.

Who may benefit from an assessment?

Common concerns include uneven tooth shapes, spaces, discolouration, chipped or worn teeth and asymmetry. Assessment is particularly useful when more than one factor is involved. Not every adult is automatically suitable for every procedure, and sometimes no treatment or a limited intervention is the most appropriate choice.

Tooth wear or repeated fractures may reflect a functional issue that should be investigated before changing appearance. Covering a problem without understanding its cause can leave the underlying issue unresolved.

What does digital smile design involve?

  1. Photographs, scans and other clinically indicated records document the starting point.
  2. The dentist analyses proportions and discusses goals and limitations.
  3. A digital proposal can help explain potential changes.
  4. Where appropriate, a temporary mock-up allows the proposed contours to be assessed in the mouth.
  5. The agreed plan is refined before definitive treatment.

A preview supports communication, but it is not a guaranteed prediction. Material properties, the underlying teeth, gum response and clinical findings may affect the final result. Ask how changes will be discussed if new information emerges during treatment.

How long does smile-design treatment take?

Time depends on the procedures involved. A limited restorative plan and a plan involving orthodontics, gum treatment or implants have very different sequences. Healing, laboratory stages, trial appointments and reviews must be included.

If you are travelling, ask for a written provisional schedule and the circumstances that could extend it. Do not treat a single-trip or express timetable as a clinical guarantee. The final sequence follows examination and agreement on the treatment scope.

What affects cost?

  • The number of teeth and procedures involved.
  • The type of restorations and laboratory work.
  • The need for orthodontics, gum treatment or replacement teeth.
  • Planning records, previews and trial stages.
  • Review, maintenance and possible future repair needs.

Compare written proposals by what they include rather than only their headline price. Confirm whether temporary restorations and follow-up appointments are part of the quotation.

Maintenance and realistic expectations

Cleaning, professional reviews and managing factors such as grinding remain important after cosmetic treatment. Restorations can wear, chip or need replacement; whitening can fade. No material removes the need for long-term care.

The ADA veneer information is useful when considering the commitment involved in adhesive restorations. Ask about risks and alternatives, including less invasive options, before deciding.

Questions to bring to a consultation

  • Which concern does each proposed treatment address?
  • How much healthy tooth tissue would be changed?
  • Could alignment, whitening or a smaller restorative plan achieve the goal?
  • What can a preview show, and what can it not promise?
  • How will maintenance be arranged after I return home?
