What does orthodontic treatment do?

Orthodontics changes tooth position and can help address crowding, spacing and some bite problems. Planning considers the teeth, supporting tissues and jaw relationships. Some skeletal problems need a broader approach, so no appliance can be assumed to solve every concern.

Adults as well as younger patients can be assessed. Age alone is not the deciding factor: oral health, support around the teeth and the intended movements matter.

How fixed braces work

Brackets are attached to the teeth and connected by a wire. The clinician adjusts the system to apply controlled forces. Fixed appliances can provide useful control for a wide range of movements, including cases where a removable appliance may be less suitable.

Because brackets remain in place, you do not need to remember to insert them. However, cooperation is still essential: effective cleaning, dietary care, attendance and, where prescribed, wearing elastics. A fixed appliance does not remove the need for patient involvement.

How clear aligners work

Aligners are removable trays made for a sequence of planned tooth positions. The clinician specifies when to change each set and how long to wear it. Tooth-coloured attachments or additional procedures may be needed for particular movements.

They are less conspicuous than many fixed appliances and can be removed for eating and cleaning. The trade-off is consistent wear and careful storage. They are not necessarily invisible and can still cause pressure, rubbing or soreness.

Clear aligners and braces compared

A table cannot identify the right appliance for your bite or show that one is always quicker, cheaper or more comfortable. Those comparisons require equivalent treatment goals and a full quotation.

What will the clinician assess?

• The type and amount of crowding or spacing.
• The relationship between upper and lower teeth and jaws.
• Gum health, decay and existing dental work.
• The movements needed and any additional procedures.
• Your ability to follow wear and cleaning instructions.
• The practicality of appointments, repairs and retention.

Records can include photographs, scans and radiographs when indicated. A digital simulation is a planning tool rather than a promise that each tooth will move exactly as displayed.

Daily life during treatment

Aligners are generally removed for eating and drinks other than water, according to the instructions for your system. Clean teeth before reinserting them and clean trays as directed. Avoid exposing them to heat or improvising adjustments yourself.

With fixed braces, avoid foods likely to damage brackets or wires and take extra care when cleaning. Some tenderness may occur after adjustments or new aligners. Contact the team for persistent pain, breakages or an appliance that no longer fits.

How long will treatment take?

The starting bite, goals, biological response and cooperation affect duration. Missed appointments, broken appliances or inconsistent wear can delay progress. Limited cosmetic alignment and comprehensive bite correction should not be compared as though they were the same treatment.

Retainers are part of the plan

Teeth can move after active treatment. Retainers help maintain their position, and ongoing wear is commonly needed for the long term. Ask which type is proposed, how to clean it and what to do if it breaks or no longer fits. Finishing the last aligner or removing brackets is not the end of maintenance.

Costs and care across countries

Fees depend on complexity, appliance system, reviews and additional procedures. Confirm whether refinements and retainers are included. If you live abroad, agree the in-person review schedule and arrangements for urgent problems or transfer of care before beginning.
