Whitening starts with healthy teeth and gums

Before cosmetic treatment, we check for decay, cracks, gum disease, leaking restorations and existing sensitivity. These concerns may need attention first. Your age, general health, pregnancy or breastfeeding are also relevant to the decision. Whitening is an elective treatment and is not suitable for everyone.

Professional cleaning removes deposits and some surface stains; whitening changes the shade of natural tooth tissue. Neither is a substitute for the other. Read about professional teeth cleaning if tartar or surface staining is your main concern.

In-clinic and dentist-supervised home options

In-clinic whitening uses professional products with protection for the surrounding soft tissues. A home programme uses trays and a product selected by the dentist, with individual instructions on wear time and review. Some plans combine the two approaches.

The choice depends on the discolouration, your sensitivity and the time available. A short stay in Istanbul should not determine a more intensive protocol than your teeth can tolerate. Do not increase the strength or application time of a product yourself.

What whitening can and cannot change

Natural teeth may respond differently according to the cause of the colour change. A fixed number of shades cannot be promised. Whitening does not straighten teeth or change their shape, and it does not lighten fillings, crowns, bridges or veneers.

A single dark tooth following trauma or root canal treatment needs separate assessment. Selected root-filled teeth may be considered for an internal whitening approach, but decay, cracks or infection must be assessed first.

Shade planning before restorative treatment

If you are considering visible crowns, veneers or bonding as well as a lighter smile, the sequence matters. Whitening may be planned before the final restorative shade is chosen, with time for the colour to settle. Existing restorations may no longer match; replacing them is a separate clinical and financial decision.

Our smile makeover planning considers colour alongside tooth preservation, alignment and gum health. Crowns should not be presented as an automatic alternative simply because someone wants whiter teeth.

Sensitivity and looking after the result

Temporary sensitivity or irritation can occur. Tell your dentist if discomfort persists or is troublesome, and follow the individual advice about treatment intervals and suitable products. Avoid unregulated or unsupervised applications.

Colour can change again over time. Smoking, staining drinks and oral hygiene influence maintenance. Refreshing the result should be based on reassessment rather than frequent automatic repetition.

Before booking an appointment in Istanbul

Ask which method is proposed, how many appointments may be needed, whether any prior treatment is necessary and what the quotation includes. If you are travelling home during a supervised home programme, agree how questions and reviews will be managed.
