01

Read the urgent warning signs before making travel plans.

02

Describe the pain, swelling and any change in symptoms.

03

A dental examination is needed to establish the cause.

Understand when to seek help and what information to give the dental team.

When is it an emergency?

Get emergency medical help immediately if swelling around your mouth or neck makes breathing, swallowing or speaking difficult. Swelling around an eye also needs emergency assessment. These warning signs are described in the NHS toothache guidance.

In Türkiye, call 112 for emergency assistance. It is the national emergency number and is free to call. Do not wait for a clinic to reply to an online enquiry when you have these symptoms. See the official 112 information guide.

When should you contact a dentist?

Contact a dentist for toothache lasting more than two days, pain that painkillers do not settle, pain on biting, a bad taste, fever or swelling of the cheek or jaw. Worsening symptoms warrant earlier advice. The NHS guidance distinguishes these dental warning signs from the medical emergencies above.

A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by infection. It needs urgent dental treatment and will not go away on its own. Treatment may involve drainage, root canal treatment or removing the affected tooth; the appropriate option depends on the examination. Read the NHS explanation of dental abscesses.

Do not assume that a painful tooth must be removed. Ask what the dentist has found and which options remain available.

What can you do while waiting?

Choose soft foods and avoid chewing on the painful tooth. Very hot, cold or sweet foods may worsen discomfort. A pharmacist can advise whether a painkiller is suitable for you; follow its instructions and mention your medicines, allergies and relevant health conditions. These are temporary comfort measures, not treatment for the cause. See NHS self-care advice.

If your symptoms change after booking, tell the clinic. A booking made for mild discomfort may need reassessment if swelling or fever develops.

What should you tell the clinic?

Give a short, clear account rather than trying to name the diagnosis:

  • Where is the pain, and when did it start?
  • Is it constant, or triggered by biting, heat or cold?
  • Is there swelling, fever, an unpleasant taste or difficulty opening your mouth?
  • Has this tooth recently had a filling, crown, root canal treatment or an injury?
  • Which medicines have you taken, and do you have allergies or important medical conditions?
  • Are you in Istanbul now, and when are you due to travel?

If you have recent dental records, ask how to share them securely. A photograph may help explain a visible change, but the dentist may still need an examination and appropriate imaging.

Living in Istanbul or visiting from abroad?

If you live in Istanbul, ask how the urgent appointment connects with any further treatment and review visits. Keep a note of the plan so that relief of the immediate problem does not become the last step by accident.

If you are visiting, tell the dentist your departure date at the first contact. Ask which work is urgent, what can be completed during your stay and what follow-up will be needed after you leave. Request a written summary and the details of any temporary treatment. Your travel schedule is useful planning information; it does not determine which treatment is clinically appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wait until I return home?

That cannot be decided from the length of your trip alone. Describe your symptoms and seek dental advice before choosing to wait. Emergency warning signs require immediate action.

Will I need a root canal?

Possibly, but pain alone does not establish the diagnosis. Ask the dentist to explain the findings and alternatives. Our root canal treatment guide explains the treatment in more detail.

How do I arrange an assessment?

Use the Dentagram Istanbul contact page to ask about appointment availability. State that you have pain and describe any swelling or fever. For the emergency symptoms listed above, use emergency medical services immediately.
