01

Ask why grafting is being considered for the implant site.

02

Discuss the proposed procedure and possible alternatives.

03

Clarify healing stages before planning treatment and travel.

Understand why grafting may be discussed and what it can mean for your treatment stages.

Is a sinus lift the same thing?

A sinus lift is a particular procedure used in the back of the upper jaw when the available bone below the sinus is insufficient for the planned implant. It involves raising the sinus lining to create space, often with graft material. It is not required for every upper implant or every bone graft. See the Cambridge University Hospitals sinus lift guide.

Ask the clinician to show you where the procedure is proposed and explain why that site needs it. This helps distinguish a local graft around an implant from a different operation with its own recovery instructions.

Can grafting and implant placement happen together?

Sometimes a graft can be placed during implant surgery. In other cases, the graft needs to heal before an implant is inserted. More extensive grafting can introduce an additional healing stage. The decision depends on the site and treatment plan, as described by Cambridge University Hospitals.

Ask for a sequence of stages rather than a single promised completion date. Find out what will be checked before moving to the next stage, what temporary tooth replacement may be possible and which parts of the timetable are estimates. Our implant treatment timeline guide explains why different cases follow different schedules.

What material is used, and what are the risks?

Graft material may come from your own bone or from human, animal or synthetic sources. Ask which material is proposed and discuss any personal preferences before consenting. Material choices are described in the CUH sinus lift information.

Possible problems include pain, swelling, bruising, infection and a graft that does not develop as intended. Smoking can interfere with healing. The Guy’s and St Thomas’ patient guide explains these considerations. Sinus procedures have additional risks, including damage to the sinus lining, which your clinician should discuss using the procedure-specific information.

Provide an accurate medical and medication history. Ask for personalised preparation and aftercare instructions rather than changing any prescribed medicine yourself.

How does grafting affect travel and cost?

For residents of Istanbul, clarify the number of surgical and review appointments, the expected recovery arrangements and when the next treatment stage may be considered.

For international patients, ask whether grafting changes the number of trips. Before booking flights, confirm the proposed procedure, review arrangements and any individual travel restrictions, particularly if sinus surgery is involved. Ask who will advise you if healing needs to be checked after you return home.

Request an itemised estimate stating whether graft material, membranes if required, surgery, imaging and reviews are included. This makes it easier to compare two proposals that use the same word “implant” but include different work.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone need a graft before an implant?

No. It depends on the available bone and the planned implant position. Your assessment should establish whether grafting is necessary.

Are there alternatives to grafting?

Sometimes a different implant plan or a non-implant replacement may be considered. Ask which alternatives are clinically reasonable in your case and what their trade-offs are.

Can the whole treatment be finished in one visit?

Do not assume that it can. Ask the clinician to distinguish the surgical appointment from healing, the final restoration and review visits.
